PortableApps.com is a community site devoted to the development, promotion and use of portable applications. The site was created by John T. Haller, the developer behind numerous portable applications (like Portable Firefox and Portable OpenOffice.org) as a way to centralize the knowledge and development efforts of multiple portable application efforts.

A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer. When your USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug, none of your personal data is left behind. [PortableApps.com]

Popular portable applications hosted at the site are:

These software applications would be very handy if you prefer a “personalized” PC experience on a PC you do not personally own (i.e. at the office), but do not want (or are not allowed) to install your preferred software permanently. Since you are using an external drive for these, none of your personal or confidential stuff would be left unsecurely on the PC you used them on.
